Third Place
Third Place is a publication that explores the Oldenburg idea of third
places. The term was coined by the US sociologist, in his 1989 book -
The Great Good Place. Your first place is your home, your second place
is your workplace, and your third place is your social surroundings
that are separate from the two usual environments. Commonly, these
surroundings or dwellings include libraries, bookshops, cafes, bars and
anywhere you frequently visit. Through COVID, the increase of virtual
places, and workplaces trying to introduce third place into the second
place, third places have begun vanishing. These places are essential for
the promotion of self and community through socialising and immersing
yourself in different or comfortable environments outside of the first
and second places. My book takes the form of a traditional hardcover
book or sketchbook on the exterior, but once opened the pages are a
continuous accordion fold. The pages of the accordion fold consist of
type from the Wikipedia article about third places, my own sketches of
third places and people conversing or traversing through crowds. While
the book gives insight into third places, it itself becomes its own
third place taking up space and promotes an idea that reading or drawing
in a book can create a third place wherever and whenever.
